Why The Crew Uses Human Form

The human form used by the crew of RT-874 is not an arbitrary disguise, nor is it evidence that they are biologically human. The crew are syrakis, but omniship operation cannot currently sustain a full syraki consciousness in its complete civilizational scale. The computational and mathematical burden would be far too high, especially inside a vessel that already consumes enormous processing power to maintain its route, coherence field, internal systems, and ontological stability. For an omniship to function, the consciousness of its crew must be reduced into a lower, more stable operational mode.

This reduction is not merely cosmetic. A syraki consciousness is vastly more expanded than a human one, and maintaining that expansion requires immense computation. Inside an omniship, especially during a high-risk mission, the available computation must be allocated with extreme precision. Full syraki consciousness would make the vessel prohibitively expensive or unstable to operate. The crew therefore descends through successive layers of simplification until reaching a level closer to human consciousness: narrow, embodied, limited, emotionally legible, and computationally cheaper to stabilize.

The choice of human-like form is partly practical and partly aesthetic. Omniships do not inherently require human bodies or human experience. Other reduced forms are possible, and the first omniship created by Valtir & Blue did not use human embodiment, but a more abstract mode of reduced consciousness. RT-874, however, uses a human-like stabilization pattern because humans are the ancestral reference point of the syrakis. If the crew must descend into a lower consciousness state, then the human form offers a historically meaningful and computationally familiar structure.

RT-874 did not use a human-like consciousness mode because human consciousness was the only reduced architecture available. By the time omniships entered operational use, several downgraded consciousness templates had already been modeled, stabilized, tested, and validated for different vessels, corporations, and mission profiles. Consciousness modeling, however, remained one of the most dangerous sciences known to the syrakis. A syraki could not simply be compressed into any imagined "clean" or optimized mind without risking incoherence, identity fracture, experiential collapse, or infernal subjective states. Every viable downgrade required immense computational power, long-term experimentation, safety proofs, and stabilizers capable of preserving agency, qualia, continuity, and compatibility with the omniship's coherence field.

The human-like mode was chosen for RT-874 because it combined technical reliability with historical meaning. Human consciousness had been studied for ages as part of ancestral research: its emotional architecture, bodily limitations, fear responses, pleasures, attachments, resentments, and primitive survival mechanisms were already deeply mapped and repeatedly stabilized. Its defects were known costs, not overlooked errors. Other omniships used other reduced modes, including more abstract or nonhuman patterns, but RT-874's designers selected the human template because it was safe enough, computationally tractable, culturally resonant, and symbolically appropriate. The crew descended into the form of their ancestral origin not because it was pure, but because it was known, stable, and charged with meaning.

This does not mean the crew becomes truly human in the original biological sense. The syrakis do not fully know what it was to be human, and their human-like mode is a reconstruction, stabilization, and approximation rather than a perfect resurrection of ancestral humanity. Their bodies, perceptions, memories, instincts, and emotional patterns are human-shaped, but they remain syraki continuities compressed into that form. The human experience aboard RT-874 is therefore both genuine and artificial: real as lived consciousness, but engineered as an operational state.

This explains why Mike and the others begin the novel in human bodies and human-like minds while still being syrakis. They were told the reason before the mission, but the catastrophe and memory disruption prevent them from understanding it at first. As the story progresses, the explanation returns in fragments. The human form was not a deception by Theravada Corporation, nor a narrative convenience inside the world. It was a necessary reduction, chosen because the omniship needed compatible consciousness-fields, limited computation, and a stable mode of embodiment through which the crew could survive and operate.
